Into The Wild

“I feel absolute admiration and great respect for these guys. Each of them told me a story. Standing in front of my Leica lens, they gave me a part of themselves. I am immensely grateful to them for that. I hope that the trace of this bond between the photographer and the subject remains in my shots.”

— Szymon Szcześniak

  • The photos from the "Into the Wild" series are a record of Szymon Szcześniak's journey through California in 2011. They depict the people and places where they live, taken in locations such as Bombay Beach, Salton Sea, Niland, Death Valley, Ballarat, Slab City, and Joshua Tree.

The journey only partially fulfilled the photographer's dream of returning to nature. With the landscapes of Jean Loup Sieff in mind, he borrowed a car and headed into the wilderness, to Death Valley. It was like a long journey to visit old friends he hadn't seen in a long time. Hours of driving through the wilderness induced a sort of trance, clearing the mind and sharpening all the senses. This mood is very palpable in the photographs, filled with the intense emotions the artist experienced during the journey - profound loneliness alternating with immense awe at nature and the people.
